Bergerac has been said to be a modern yet attractive town, which is set in the Dordogne region. Once this town was known for its blooming trading ports and has easy access to the countryside, not forgetting as well many famous wine producers.

The preserved old centre of Bergerac is decorated with the 15 th Century fixtures and the lanes which follow through go down to many of the half-timbered houses. Not only is this Bergerac well-known for its interesting museums. Many tourists are astonished by the fascinating Museum of Tobacco which looks at a different collection of tobacco items and belongings. The Wine Museum is a place which should be visited, it is located near the statue of Cyrano, this is one if the town’s most renowned characters.

Things to go See and Do in Bergerac

Bergerac lies in the centre of a wine-producing district on the Dordogne River; it has an attractive location from which to explore the surrounding area. There are 120 wine producers in the region. It has Monbazillac situated in the south and the outstanding Bordeaux to the west of the region. Only one hour and thirty minutes from Bergerac is the wine region of Bordeaux. In Bordeaux you can tour the wineries and sample some of the products made. In October you can’t miss the brilliant grape harvest. You can take a day trip to Bordeaux and visit its lively atmosphere and some of the magnificent 18 th Century architecture. Visiting the market town of Périgueux is worth while as well. The intimidating Cathédrale St Front is the main point of the town; it is enclosed with vegetable farms and vineyards. The food in this particular town is outstanding and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from.

Bergerac also has many modern yet different restaurants and a large amount of traditional cafes where you can enjoy relaxing evenings, by watching the sunset at the same time. But for the people who like there bars there are plenty where you can taste some of the regions wines.

Getting there and away to Bergerac

Bergerac’s Roumanières Airport is only five kms south from the city centre. You can easily fly there from London, Southampton and Paris.

By taking a taxi into the town takes about five minutes and cost about €7.

By car from Bordeaux you can catch the D936 for 90 km to Bergerac.

When going on the train from Paris, you should take the Bordeaux-bound TGV train from Paris Montparnasse station. The journey takes at least three hours and thirty minutes. You should then catch the connecting train to Bergerac; the rest of the journey will take about an hour.

Bergerac is at its best in the spring. Autumn in quite pleasant but the days are fairly short. Winter temperatures are usually around 6-9C, so it can become quite chilly. The summer temperatures can be 18-20C.
