Travel Guide to Avignon

Avignon is the delightful medieval town, which is well-known for its religious history. In the 14 th Century, Avignon was the capital of Christendom. This is where the Pope did live before he lived in Rome. The walled city today is now home to magnificent architecture. The Festival d’Avignon is in July and August, this lively festival offers music, theatre and art to the city, it pulls in tourists from all over the world. The town is a very cultural centre, which is home to exciting galleries, cinemas and theatres.

Major Attractions in Avignon

A lot of Annecys best known attractions are associated with religion. The place which is part fortress, part palace is a key attraction called Palais des Papes. It over looks the town and it was once home to a group of cardinals who had ran away to Avignon on the 14 th Century. The Chapelle St-Jean is recognised for its outstanding frescoes since the 14 th Century. The Palais has a spectacular interior, not forgetting the banquet hall and the Pope’s bedroom. Close by, you can see the 12 th Century Cathédrale Notre-Dame des Doms were it is the final resting place for many Popes. Not only is this town bounded with its ancient walls and the remains of the popular Bridge or Avignon. This is celebrated in the famous French customary folk song which still stands.

Things to Do and See in Avignon

Visiting Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon across the Rhône is a worth while experience. This little town is full of beautiful buildings, where the cardinals used to live in. The calm and peaceful atmosphere gives the wonderful place relaxing and enjoyable scenery. The Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon is not the only place you should visit; the Eglise Notre-Dame is appealing to visit. It was founded in 1933 by Cardinal Arnaud de Via. The building has wonderful designs done to it. You can also go visit the antique copy of Enguerrand Charontons Pièta, but the original; is found in the Louvre.

If you just want some fresh French air then you can go walk down the peaceful promenade du Rocher-des-Doms. Along the gardens you will find spectular views across the breath taking Rhône to Villeneuve-lèz-Avignon.

Getting there and away to Avignon

A one hour flight from Paris to Aeroport Avignon-Caumont takes you, eight kms away from the city.

When driving to Avignon from Paris is as much as 700 kms. All you have to do is take the A6 south to Lyon, then the A7 south straight to Avignon.

As well as this high-speed TGV trains depart from Gare de Lyon in Paris to Annecy, which takes about three hours.

When taking a train from Marseilles, it takes about one hour and ten minutes.
