Santa Maria Airport (SMA) Information
Introduction
Santa Maria is the easternmost of the Azores Islands, situated in the Atlantic Ocean about 1,200kms west of Portugal. The airport is located on the island's west coast, 4kms north of the main town of Vila do Porto. SATA (Air Azores) operates regularly scheduled flights to and from the other main airports in the Azores, Ponta Delgada and Horta. Other regularly scheduled flights go to and from Lisbon, as well as the Czech Republic and Venezuela. International charter flights comprise a good deal of Santa Maria Airport's traffic, which amounts to 75,000 passengers per year. Recent charter flights arrived from Geneva, Dakar, Caracas and Newfoundland.

The airport's car park has a capacity of 120 vehicles. The fee for parking is €1.32 per day.
Getting to and from Santa Maria
If travelling by car, the town of Vila do Porto is a 5-minute drive to the south along the main road, which runs near the coast. From Vila do Porto, roads lead east to Santo Espírito and Santa Bárbara, and north to Sao Pedro and Anjos. Buses of the public transportation system and taxis travel to all parts of the island.
Amenities at Santa Maria Airport
There are ATMs in the arrivals and departures areas, as well as a bank branch of the Banco Comercial dos Azores (open 8:30 to 15:00) and a post office (open 9:00 to 18:30). A tour operator also has a counter in the terminal's public zone. No porter service is available at Santa Maria Airport, however free luggage trolleys are provided. A VIP lounge is available 'for persons with VIP status'. Requests for use must be submitted to the airport director.
