Finland Airports
There are more than two dozen airports in Finland, many of which cater for flights from Europe and beyond, with more than 20 cities linked by daily air services. As with other Scandinavian countries, Finland has an excellent public transport network, where trains are on time, buses are efficient and the roads are near perfect. Finland is mainly wilderness country and it is for this reason that it gets so many visitors who are looking for peace and tranquillity, far away from bustling cities and throbbing beach resorts. Vast tracts of land are given over to forests and lakes, while the Baltic coastline is stunning and features excellent sailing and fishing. The capital of Helsinki is well known for its striking architecture and abundance of art.
Helsinki's Vantaa International Airport in the south of the country is the main air hub for Finland, while Tampere-Pirkkala International Airport provides access to Finland's verdant southwestern region and is the gateway to Finland's series of great lakes. Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is located eight miles southwest of Tampere and features two passenger terminals. Most flights arrive here from European and domestic destinations.
Finland is a large country and most places in the north are fairly remote, making domestic air travel convenient. There are frequent domestic flights all over the country and many of Finland's smaller airports also receive services from European cities. Although efficient, Finland's railway service is quite limited due to the nature of the land, yet buses run virtually everywhere. Ferry crossings from Estonia and Sweden provide fast access into Finland for those travelling by car and bus.
