Transport infrastructure in Austria is generally very efficient and you can find reliable information available in English in most parts. Many locals rely on boats, buses, trams, bicycles, cars, and trains to get from A to B. Given the size of Austria, it isn't really necessary to use air travel. However, if you are travelling longer distances, there are a number of airlines that cater to long-haul routes.

Austria has a total of 55 airports and two heliports, making it easily accessible for travellers from all over the world. The 6 main airports include Graz Airport, Innsbruck Airport, Klagenfurt Airport, Linz Airport, Salzburg Airport, and Vienna Airport. Located in the Austrian capital, Vienna International Airport is the largest of the airports and welcomes up to 18 million passengers per year.

Nicknamed Schwechat in reference to the nearby town, Vienna Airport is located in the southeast of Vienna. You can find the following main international airlines operating from it's runways: Austrian Airlines, Air Berlin, Air France, British Airways, China Airlines, and Swiss International Airlines.

Vienna International Airport currently has three terminals, consisting of terminals 1, 2, and the provisional terminal 1A, which offers more room for low-cost carriers. The construction of a new terminal, Skylink, has been underway since 2004. This is to increase the airport's capacity to deal with the growing influx of passengers, and to accommodate bigger aircraft, like the Airbus A380.

Feel free to take your pick from the modes of transport available to airport users. The city airport train takes just 16 minutes to get from the airport to the city of Vienna. Alternatively, there is a bus that takes 20 minutes into Vienna, while you can also catch a bus to Hungary or Slovakia. Other options include taxis, limousines, and rental cars.
