Mount Mawson is a small and friendly ski resort located in Mount Field National Park near Lake Dobson. Offering a surprisingly wide array of ski runs to suit all abilities and boasting one of the steepest runs in Australia, albeit a rather short one, Mount Mawson is one of Australia's most popular ski resorts.

The resort town is small and boasts a friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere. A professional ski school is on hand to teach newcomers, while extensive equipment hire is also available. Further facilities include a small shop, café and children's playgrounds.

There's something for everyone here at Mount Mawson, with a nice spread of runs suitable for all different skill levels, although half the runs are designated as suitable for intermediate skiers. A total of four chairlifts give access to the runs, which include one of the steepest in Australia, while cross country skiers will revel in extensive, unmarked cross country trails.

Basic self-contained lodges are available at the ski resort in Mount Mawson and are particularly popular among families, while there are also numerous camping facilities scattered around Lake Dobson. As a small resort, it is light on après-ski facilities, although there is a small café and shop on hand, while a bistro is located at the visitor centre at the park entrance.

Mt Field National Park offers visitors a huge range of sights and attractions to explore, ranging from the stunningly beautiful Russell Falls to the famed Tall Trees Walk and a plethora of native wildlife.

The ski season usually runs from around mid-July through to mid-September. Mount Mawson resort is located in the beautiful Derwent Valley and Central Highlands of Tasmania, and the best way to reach the ski resort is to drive.

Skiing in Mount Mawson

Located just 45 miles from Hobart, Mount Mawson is a popular family resort nestled in the stunning natural surroundings of Mount Field National Park. Its wide range of runs ensures there's something for everyone, while it also boasts an intimate, back-to-nature atmosphere.

A total of four chairlifts gives access to the resort's runs, 30 per cent of which are designated as beginner, 50 per cent as intermediate and 20 per cent as advanced runs, all spread over a skiable terrain of 40 acres and a vertical drop of 230 feet. Mount Mawson ski resort is home to a toboggan run and one of the steepest runs in Australia, while extensive cross country skiing can also be enjoyed here, linking Mount Mawson with the Rodway Range, Tarn Shelf and Mount Field West. The trails are unmarked and a number of basic huts are located in these areas.

Après-ski is limited to a mountainside café which also doubles as a shop, while equipment hire and a ski school are also on offer. A larger bistro is located at the Visitor Centre near the park's entrance 10 miles away. Most people come here to get back to nature, camp and enjoy the great outdoors.

The ski season kicks off in mid-July and continues through to mid-September, with the best snowfalls occurring during August. The only way to get here is to drive, with Mount Mawson situated a 45-mile drive from Hobart, with a journey time of just over an hour.

Transportation to Mount Mawson

Mount Mawson ski resort is located in Mount Field National Park in the stunning Derwent Valley area of southern Tasmania, just 45 miles from Hobart.

The only way to reach Mount Mawson is to drive, with the route up to the mountain being extraordinarily scenic, passing through a range of different forest types and settings. From Hobart, follow the B61 on a lovely 45-mile journey taking around one and a half hours. Once you reach the park entrance you'll find an informative visitor centre with a bistro and a shop. A small standard fee will get you into the national park, and the final 10-mile leg up to Mount Mawson won't take you long.

Hobart Airport offers daily flights to all major Australian cities and many regional centres. Car hire is also available for the drive to Mount Mawson.
